Conditions for Contributions to Whonix

ENCRYPTED SUPPORT LP, who has funded and run the Whonix project since the beginning, and who has contributed the majority of Whonix specific code would like to have a right to redistribute parts of this code under proprietary licenses.

That’s why we ask every developer who contributes code to Whonix project to transfer copyright to ENCRYPTED SUPPORT LP and permission to reuse the code under a different license. Our Terms of Service apply.

• Compilation License vs Individual Software Package License: The Whonix software is a compilation of software packages, each under its own license.
• Individual Software Package License:
  • Various Licenses: Go to the list of Whonix repositories, pick a repository such as for example security-misc to open security-misc's COPYING file to learn about each software package's individual license.
• Compilation License:
  • License long description used for the the compilation: The compilation is made available the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation, either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version with additional terms applicable per GNU GPL version 3 section 7.
  • License short identifier for the compilation: The license can be refereed to as AGPL-3+-with-additional-terms-1.

Wiki

For the following reasons, only the plain text is licensed:

• The design, html, CSS, and JavaScript (mediawiki) aren’t copyrighted by Whonix. These rely upon the license provided by mediawiki / any wiki skins / extensions Whonix is using. Anybody interested in using these elements is better off acquiring it from the origin/upstream and not from Whonix, since Whonix does not fork it. This description is purposefully generic in nature. The actual current license (version) of mediawiki is deliberately unmentioned. This avoids inaccuracies and publications becoming outdated at a later time. The reader is recommended to seek this information from the original mediawiki source.
• Illustrative images (See Missing Libre Illustrative Images for examples) are not copyrighted by Whonix.
• Some screenshots might be Freedom Software licensed by third parties but still not be copyrighted by Whonix or under a Whonix license.

The Whonix wiki text is a compilation of documentation, each under its own license.
The compilation is made available the terms of the AGPL-3+-with-additional-terms-1, either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version with additional terms applicable per AGNU GPL version 3 section 7.
